Back by popular demand! During the Spring semester, the Department of Biology will offer a 6-day workshop in Light Microscopy and the Living Cell. This workshop will be under the direction of Dr. Richard I. Woodruff. Current plans call for Tuesday and Thursday evening sessions 4:00-6:00 PM March 29-April12 and a full day on Saturday, April 14. Saturday’s session will be exclusively devoted to hands-on training. |

CAS Student Research Award |

Undergraduate student Radhika Bhatt (Biology) has received a CAS Student Research Award (Spring 2006). The research will be conducted in the laboratory of Dr. Maureen Knabb; the research project is entitled: Investigation of antiviral effects of green tea extract on HSV-2 infection in WB cells. |

Spinner Dolphins: Aerial Maneuvers |

Dr. Frank Fish, biology, and Dr. Anthony Nicastro, physics, published the article “Dynamics of aerial maneuvers of spinner dolphins” in the Journal of Experimental Biology 209: 590-598 (2006). The article was co-authored with Dr. Daniel Weihs of Technion, Israel. Dr. Fish also presented invited seminars “Enhanced swimming performance by flow control in marine mammals” to the Biology Department of the University of Rhode Island and “Biomechanics of running” at the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School at New Bolton Center. |

Dr. Frank Fish, biology, was co-author on a presentation “The beaver tail: function in swimming and connective tissue structure” at the Annual Meeting of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology. The presentation was co-authored with Dr. Natalia Rybczynski of the Canadian Museum of Nature and Dr. Ann Pabst and William McLellan of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. |

Dr. Frank Fish made a presentation “Dolphin flukes as passively self-adjusting flexible propulsors for high efficiency transport” at the Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals held in San Diego. The presentation was co-authored with Dr. John Beneski (WCU), undergraduate student Moira Nusbaum (WCU), Dr. Dalene Ketten (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution), and Dr. Terrie Williams (University of California, Santa Cruz). |
