New Funding for GNA PDF Print E-mail

New Funding From the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR):  Gerard Hertel and Gregory Turner were awarded a grant from DCNR’s Wild Resource Conservation Program to establish demonstration plots on the Gordon Natural Area where interested publics can come and see the effects of white-tailed deer and invasive plants on forested ecosystems.

We are pleased to announce that the Administrative Budget Committee has approved a one year pilot program for a part-time Stewardship Manager for the Gordon Natural Area (GNA). The Department of Biology has appointed Dr. Gerard Hertel, Adjunct Professor of Forest Ecology and Entomology, to fill the Stewardship Position.  Dr Hertel retired in 2001 after working 34 years for the USDA Forest Service.  He has a BS from theUniversity of Montana, a Masters from Duke University and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  He has taught Dendrology and Entomology at WCU and has volunteered many hours in behalf of the GNA.ImageWe are pleased to announce that the Administrative Budget Committee has approved a one year pilot program for a part-time Stewardship Manager for the Gordon Natural Area (GNA). Whale Hydrodynamics PDF Print E-mail

ImageFrank Fish, Biology, presented an invited seminar, “Hydrodynamic flow control in whales and dolphins,” to the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on October 18 and to the Center for Biologically Inspired Design at the Georgia Institute of Technology on October 30.  Professor Fish co-authored the published article “Morphological specializations of baleen whales associated with hydrodynamic performance and ecological niche” in the Journal of Morphology, 267: 1284-1294 (2006).  The article was co-authored with Drs. Becky Woodward and Jeremy Winn of the University of Maine.

ImageTwo biology graduate students, Kimberly Urban and Amanda Rowlands, have each received a $1000 grant from the West Chester Foundation.  The awards were based on each student’s academic record and recommendations from their professors. Both students are currents working in the laboratory of Dr. Oné R. Pagan.

Dr. Greg Turner, Biology, has published “Overcoming Resource Constraints for Biological Inquiry: Scenarios and Adaptations” in Best Products for Teacher Preparation in Mathematics and Science, a monograph published by CETP-PA, 2006, pp. 119-122.  Professor Turner also presented a talk entitled “Species Composition and Structure of the Gordon Natural Area, an Urban Forest in Southeast PA” at the annual Pennsylvania Academy of Sciences meeting in March 2006.  In addition, he presented a poster, “Plant Distributions along Disturbance Corridors at a Blue Ridge Mountain Natural Area” at the annual Ecological Society of America conference in Memphis in August 2006.

ImageWe welcome Dr. Xin Fan to the Department of Biology.  Dr. Fan earned her BS in pharmaceutical science from Jiangxi College of Medicine, China, her MS in pharmaceutical chemistry from China’s Kunming Medical College, and her Ph.D. in microbiology is from the University of Pennsylvania.  Dr. Fan was a lecturer in microbiology at Thomas Jefferson University, a lecturer in new drug development and pharmaceutical chemistry at Jiangxi College of Chinese Medicine, and a postdoctoral fellow in the University of Pennsylvania’s Infectious Diseases Division.  She is a microbiologist who does research on viruses and vaccines and has several publications on this research.  She received both pre-doctoral and post-doctoral grants from NIH.

ImageDr. Frank Fish, biology, published the article "Limits of nature and advances of technology in marine systems: What does biomimetics have to offer to aquatic robots?" in Applied Bionics and Biomechanics 3(1): 49-60 (2006).  In addition, Dr. Fish presented an invited paper "Dolphin flukes as passively self-adjusting flexible propulsors for high efficiency transport" in the minim-symposium Biomimetics and Bio-inspiration at the 15th U.S. National Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics held in Boulder, Colorado.  Dr. Fish also presented an invited seminar titled, "Hydrodynamic flow control in whales and dolphins: It's no rocket science....well yes it is but in a good way" at the Shoals Marine Laboratory, Cornell University.

ImageDr. Frank Fish, biology, published the paper titled "The myth and reality of Gray's paradox: implication of dolphin drag reduction for technology" in Bioinspiration and Biomimetics 1: R17-R25 (2006). Dr. Fish also presented an invited seminar “Enhanced swimming performance by flow control in marine mammals” at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport, Rhode Island and at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of George Washington University.
